Born and raised in Sussex, formed by and bound to the landscape, I can feel it in my bones. Rolling downs, craggy white cliffs, vast stretches of coastline, undulating sand dunes and miles of well trodden chalk paths. The Sussex landscape inspires me to look for colours, textures, shapes and forms to translate into my work.
Each piece is created as a response to the landscape and the materials that can be found within it. A sense of place and connection is central to my practice.
Walking, exploring and caring for my surroundings is as much a part of the process as the making itself. I collect and gather from my local environment and include these gathered materials in each piece.
I make my work from natural, sustainable materials; working mainly with paper, fire ash, chalk, lime and sand. I create colour and texture from my surroundings, experimenting with natural materials and foraging from the earth, without upsetting the natural balance. The unpredictable nature of working with these materials is all part of the transformative process.
