EXTRACTION: Art on the Edge of the Abyss is a multi-media, multi-venue art initiative which originated the United States. Involving over 50 organisations and hundreds of artists, it is raising awareness of the huge environmental problems extractive industries are causing. It began in 2019 in Montana, home to many massive oil drills which have scarred the earth. It aims to provoke societal change and ‘raise a ruckus’.GroundWork Gallery and Sprygg are coordinating the UK branch of this project.
The whole world – Industry, governments, consumers and workers – has become dependent on fuelling our lives with extracted materials.
And the environment is suffering
Through our Extraction programmes, the work of artists help us to discover more about the dangers to the earth, the pressures on environment and employment, the conflicts with industry and governments.
Here you will find connections and communications between artists, technologists and communities which will help us to think more deeply and act with greater concern about Extraction.
