SpryggStream - online conversations

SpryggStream.

bringing together artists, technologists and communities in conversations
to inspire Acts of Genius

Sprygg is anchored in the Split festival. But with the ongoing COVID uncertainties, we’ve started a series of conversations and colaborations – SpryggStreams – in the virtual world, bringing together inspiring people working at the intersection of art, technology and community to consider and generate outcomes that will inform now, and the gathering in Split.

SpryggStream - online conversations

EXTRACTION: Art on the Edge of the Abyss.

EXTRACTION: Art on the Edge of the Abyss is a multi-media, multi-venue art initiative which originated the United States. Involving over 50 organisations and hundreds of artists, it is raising awareness of the huge environmental problems extractive industries are causing. It began in 2019 in Montana, home to many massive oil drills which have scarred the earth. It aims to provoke societal change and ‘raise a ruckus’.GroundWork Gallery and Sprygg are coordinating the UK branch of this project.

The film tells the story of young black activists in Chicago’s South Side, focusing on Jedidiah Brown, who has dedicated his life to fight for justice and peace in his community.

It explores the mental health impact of doing this work in the face of relentless violence and neglect. It also examines how the ability to broadcast their own actions and experiences on Facebook Live has empowered activists and helped them make positive change in ways that had previously not been possible.

Jon has spent decades documenting communities – his own in Chicago’s South Side as well those of  migrants from Central America to the US. He forges long-term, sometimes multigenerational relationships with his subjects, so his images tell very intimate stories of people who live in communities whose true stories are often not told.

He has recently begun to show his work in VR and archive his work on the blockchain.

Jon is a Guggenheim Fellow, National Geographic Explorer, and TED Fellow.

Karen and Jon spoke live on October 9, 2020, and this was recorded and edited for clarity.
